To build this unique fountain, you will need a number of watering cans, a small pump (can be found for under $30) and a source of electricity to plug the pump in to, plus tubing to fit the pump and reach from inside the top watering can to inside the watering can at the bottom of your steps. Unless your water source is a pond near the cans, as in the second picture. In that case, the tubing would need to reach the source of the water. Clear tubing is best, it will be less likely to be seen.
Discuss with the sales person where you buy your pump what the best size/strength would be for the pump, taking into consideration the height and length of your arrangement from bottom to top.
Position your cans so the water that pours from the spout of each one will pour into the next. If you have a submersible pump (make sure it will fit inside the can before purchasing) put it in the top-most watering can. If it is not submersible, hide it somewhere behind or beside the top-most can. Attach the tubing and run it to either your water source (pond, stream, etc) or to inside the lowest watering can.
If you don’t want the water to pour out onto the ground, you will need to use a regular can or bucket, one that doesn’t have a spout, as your lowest can. If you want the water to spill back out into a stream or other source of water, then a spouted can is fine to use.
Now that everything is set up, add water to the cans. Add it just to the level where it is about to spill over. Plug in and turn on the pump, and your watering can fountain will come to life!
